Adenoidectomy removes the adenoids, a pad of immune tissue high at the back of the nose, behind the soft palate. It is mostly a children's operation, because adenoids are largest between about 3 and 7 years of age and shrink naturally by the teenage years.
Removing enlarged adenoids opens the nasal airway and helps the tubes that ventilate the middle ear to work. It does not treat allergy, and in a small number of young children some adenoid tissue grows back.
What Adenoid Surgery (Adenoidectomy) involves
Your child is asleep under general anaesthetic. The surgeon works entirely through the open mouth, so there are no cuts on the face. The soft palate is gently held forward and the adenoid pad is viewed with a mirror or a small endoscope. The tissue is then removed with a curette, suction cautery, a microdebrider or coblation, and any bleeding points are sealed. If glue ear is also present, ventilation tubes can be placed in the eardrums during the same anaesthetic, and tonsils can be removed at the same time when they are part of the problem.
Who is a good candidate for Adenoid Surgery (Adenoidectomy)?
Surgery is considered when enlarged adenoids cause lasting problems that have not settled with time or nasal sprays.
- Children with constant mouth breathing, loud snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep
- Children with repeated glue ear or ear infections, often combined with ventilation tubes
- Persistent blocked or runny nose where examination shows large adenoids
- Adults with proven adenoid enlargement, after other causes have been ruled out by endoscopy
Es ist normalerweise nicht die richtige Wahl, wenn:
- Children with a cleft palate or a submucous cleft, where removal can cause nasal-sounding speech
- Children with an untreated bleeding disorder
- A child with an active chest or throat infection, until it clears
- Mild symptoms that are improving as the child grows
Technikoptionen
- Curettage: The traditional method: the pad is scraped away with a curved instrument. Quick and widely used.
- Suction diathermy or coblation: Heat or radiofrequency energy removes tissue under direct endoscopic view with very little bleeding. Often preferred in small children.
- Microdebrider: A powered shaver used under endoscopic view for precise removal near the Eustachian tube openings.
- Adenoidectomy with ventilation tubes: Combined operation when glue ear and hearing loss are part of the picture.
Was passiert während Ihrer Behandlung
The operation takes 15 to 30 minutes under general anaesthetic. A parent can usually stay until the child is asleep and be present in recovery. Most children go home the same day after 4 to 6 hours of observation, once they are drinking and comfortable. Very young children or those with sleep apnoea may be kept overnight for monitoring.
Expect a mild sore throat, a blocked nose and bad breath for up to a week. Simple pain relief is usually enough. Most children eat normally within a day or two. Keep your child away from nursery or school and from crowds for about a week to lower the chance of infection. Snoring often improves within days, although swelling can make the nose sound blocked at first. Flying is normally allowed after about 7 to 10 days, once the surgeon is happy that the bleeding risk has passed.
- Back to everyday activity: About 1 week off school
- When results show: Breathing improves within days to 2 weeks
- How long they last: Usually permanent; regrowth is uncommon
Sicherheit, Risiken und Revisionspolitik
Adenoidectomy is one of the lower-risk operations in children, but it is still surgery under general anaesthetic.
- Bleeding, usually in the first hours and only rarely later in the first two weeks
- A temporary change in the voice, sounding more nasal for a few weeks
- Lasting escape of air or fluid through the nose in children with an undetected palate weakness, which is rare
- Regrowth of adenoid tissue, more likely when surgery is done before the age of 3
- Damage to teeth or lips from the mouth gag
- Neck stiffness for a few days, and very rarely a neck joint problem that needs treatment

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Does my child need the adenoids for immunity?
They are part of the immune system in early childhood, but other tissue does the same work. Studies have not shown meaningful weakening of immunity after removal.
Can adenoids be seen without surgery?
Yes. A thin flexible endoscope passed through the nose in clinic, or sometimes an X-ray, shows their size.
Will a nasal spray work instead?
A steroid nasal spray used for some weeks shrinks the adenoids enough in some children, and is often tried first when symptoms are moderate.
Is it sensible to travel for such a short operation?
Only if you can stay in the city for at least a week afterwards and your child is otherwise well. Many families choose to have it done close to home.
