Mental health conditions are patterns of thought, mood or behaviour that cause distress or get in the way of daily life for weeks or longer. The common ones are depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, bipolar disorder and psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia. About one in four people experience one at some point.
They are health conditions, not character flaws, and effective treatments exist for most. Recovery is usually gradual and depends on steady care: a clinician who knows you, regular appointments, and support from the people around you. That is the central reason treatment works best close to home.

Ursachen und Risikofaktoren
There is rarely a single cause. Genetic vulnerability, early adversity, trauma, long-term stress, loneliness, bereavement, financial strain, physical illness and chronic pain all contribute in different proportions. Alcohol, cannabis and other drugs can trigger or worsen symptoms. Some physical conditions imitate mental illness, including thyroid disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, anaemia, sleep apnoea and side effects of medicines such as steroids, which is why a basic medical check is part of a good assessment.
Wie es diagnostiziert wird
- Clinical interview: A psychiatrist or clinical psychologist takes a detailed history of symptoms, life events, family history and risk. There is no blood test or scan that diagnoses a mental health condition.
- Standardised questionnaires: Tools such as PHQ-9 and GAD-7 measure severity and track change over time.
- Physical health checks: Blood tests for thyroid, blood count, B12, glucose and others to rule out medical contributors.
- Information from family: With your consent, someone close to you can describe changes you may not notice.
- Brain imaging: Only when the presentation is unusual, such as a first psychotic episode or symptoms starting late in life.
Behandlungsmöglichkeiten
- Talking therapies: Cognitive behavioural therapy, trauma-focused therapy, interpersonal therapy and others, typically weekly over 8 to 20 sessions.
- Medication: Antidepressants, mood stabilisers and antipsychotics where indicated. Most take weeks to work and need monitoring and dose adjustment.
- Self-help and lifestyle: Regular sleep, physical activity, less alcohol, and structured daily routine support every other treatment.
- Community and crisis services: Care coordinators, crisis teams and peer support for more severe illness.
- Hospital care: For short periods when safety cannot be managed at home.
- Family involvement: Education for relatives improves outcomes, particularly in psychosis, bipolar disorder and eating disorders.
Wenn es dringend ist
If you are thinking of ending your life, have harmed yourself, are hearing voices telling you to act, or have not slept for days with racing thoughts, contact your local emergency number, crisis line or nearest emergency department now, or ask someone to take you. This is emergency care and must happen where you are. Do not travel.
Reisen nach Türkiye zur Behandlung
Mental health care depends on a relationship that continues over time and on being able to express yourself in your own language, including humour, idiom and cultural reference. For these reasons travel is rarely the right route for psychiatric care, and it is a poor idea during a crisis or soon after a medication change. What a visit can honestly offer is limited: a one-off diagnostic second opinion if you speak a language the clinician shares, with a written report for your own doctor. Ongoing therapy and prescribing should be set up at home.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Can I get therapy abroad in a short stay?
Meaningful therapy takes weeks to months of regular sessions. A brief stay cannot replace that, and starting something you cannot continue may leave you worse off.
Will I need medication for life?
Often not. Many people take medication for 6 to 12 months after recovery. Some conditions, such as bipolar disorder, usually need long-term treatment.
Is online therapy a good alternative?
For anxiety and depression, video therapy in your own language with a properly registered therapist has good evidence.
How do I help someone who refuses help?
Listen without judgement, offer to go with them to a first appointment, and look after your own wellbeing. If you fear for their safety, contact local emergency services.
