An allergy service finds out whether your symptoms are caused by an allergic reaction, identifies the trigger, and sets up treatment. It deals with hay fever, asthma triggered by allergens, food and drug allergy, hives, eczema and insect sting reactions.
Testing is only useful when read against your history: a positive test without symptoms is not an allergy. Avoidance and medicines control most allergies; immunotherapy can reduce sensitivity but takes years.

A full assessment with skin and blood tests fits into 1 to 3 days, and a supervised challenge adds a day. That makes allergy work-up a reasonable add-on to a check-up or other treatment. Do I need to stop my medicines before testing?
Antihistamines are usually stopped 3 to 7 days before skin prick tests. Do not stop asthma inhalers. Blood tests are not affected.
Are food intolerance (IgG) tests useful?
No. IgG food panels are not validated and lead to needless diet restriction.
Can allergies be cured?
Some children outgrow food allergies. Immunotherapy can give lasting relief for pollen, mite and venom allergy. Most allergies are controlled rather than cured.
