Arm Lift

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes loose hanging skin and fat from the underside of the upper arm, between the armpit and the elbow. It is most often requested after major weight loss or when ageing has left skin that no exercise will tighten.

It gives a firmer, slimmer arm outline and makes sleeves fit. The trade-off is a long scar on the inner or back surface of the arm that can stay visible, and it does not build muscle tone.

What Arm Lift involves

You are marked standing with your arms out. Under general anaesthetic the surgeon often starts with liposuction to thin the arm and protect lymph vessels, then removes an ellipse of skin and fat running from the armpit towards the elbow. The cut is kept shallow to avoid the nerves that lie just under the fat. The deeper layer is anchored to the armpit tissue so the scar does not drift, and the skin is closed with dissolving stitches. When looseness is limited to the top third, the cut can be hidden in the armpit alone. Drains are sometimes used and a compression sleeve goes on before you wake.

Who is a good candidate for Arm Lift?

It works well when loose skin, rather than fat alone, is the problem and your weight has been steady.

• You have hanging skin under the upper arm when you hold it out
• Your weight has been stable for 6 to 12 months
• You accept a permanent scar in exchange for a better shape
• You do not smoke or will stop for at least 4 weeks either side of surgery

The operation takes 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic, with a night in hospital in most cases. You wake with both arms wrapped and raised on pillows. Tightness and an ache on lifting the arms are usual for the first days and are controlled with tablets.

Keep your elbows at or below shoulder height and avoid lifting anything heavy for 3 to 4 weeks. Wear the sleeve for 4 to 6 weeks. Desk work is realistic at 1 to 2 weeks and gym work at 6 weeks. Hands and forearms may swell for a fortnight. Scars are red and firm for months and fade over 12 to 18 months.
