Attention testing is a structured assessment of concentration, impulse control and activity level in children and adults. It combines a detailed clinical interview, rating scales completed by you and people who know you, and sometimes computerised performance tests such as CPT, TOVA, QbTest or MOXO.
No single test diagnoses ADHD. Computer tests add objective data but produce both false positives and false negatives. The diagnosis is clinical: it rests on symptoms beginning in childhood, present in more than one setting and clearly impairing life, after other explanations have been considered.
What Attention and ADHD Assessment shows
The assessment shows whether inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are present at a level beyond what is expected for age, how long they have existed and how much they interfere with school, work and relationships. Computer tests measure reaction time, variability, missed targets and impulsive responses. Cognitive testing can reveal learning difficulties or working memory weakness. Just as importantly, the evaluation looks for conditions that mimic or accompany ADHD: anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, sleep apnoea, thyroid problems, hearing or vision problems, autism, substance use and, in older adults, early cognitive decline.

Expect 2 to 4 hours, sometimes split across two visits. A psychiatrist or clinical psychologist takes your developmental, school, work and mental health history. You complete rating scales. A computerised test takes 15 to 25 minutes: you respond to certain shapes on a screen and hold back for others, sometimes with a motion sensor on your head. Children are also observed and may have cognitive testing.

A verbal summary is often possible the same day; the written report follows in 1 to 2 weeks. It should state whether diagnostic criteria are met, list other findings and give recommendations: education about the condition, behavioural strategies, school or workplace adjustments and, where appropriate, medication prescribed and monitored by a doctor.
