Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, removes breast tissue, fat and skin to make heavy breasts smaller, lighter and higher. The nipple and areola are moved up on a pedicle of tissue that keeps their blood supply.
It reliably eases neck, shoulder and back pain, bra strap grooves and rashes under the breasts, and makes exercise easier; satisfaction is among the highest in plastic surgery. The costs are permanent scars, possible loss of nipple sensation or breastfeeding ability, and an exact cup size cannot be promised.
What Breast Reduction involves
Standing markings set the new nipple height and the skin pattern. Under general anaesthetic the surgeon cuts around the areola to reduce its diameter, removes the outer skin layer over the chosen pedicle, and then excises wedges of gland and fat, mainly from the lower and outer breast. Each side's tissue is weighed to keep the breasts even. The remaining tissue is shaped into a cone, the nipple is set in its new position, and the skin is closed as a vertical (lollipop) or anchor scar. Liposuction may trim the side of the chest. In extremely large breasts the nipple is occasionally removed and replaced as a free graft. Removed tissue is sent for pathology.
Who is a good candidate for Breast Reduction?
It suits women whose breast weight causes physical symptoms or is out of proportion to their frame.
- You have neck, back or shoulder pain, strap grooves or recurrent rashes under the breasts
- Your breast size limits exercise or clothing
- Your breasts are fully developed and your weight is stable
- You accept scars and a possible effect on breastfeeding
- Sie rauchen nicht
Es ist normalerweise nicht die richtige Wahl, wenn:
- You are planning pregnancy soon and breastfeeding is a priority
- Your BMI is very high; weight loss first lowers wound complications and may shrink the breasts
- You smoke or vape nicotine and cannot stop
- You have not had breast imaging that is due for your age
- You will only be satisfied with one exact cup size agreed in advance
Technikoptionen
- Superomedial pedicle with vertical scar: Good projection and a shorter scar for small to moderate reductions.
- Inferior pedicle with Wise (anchor) pattern: The workhorse for large reductions and a lot of excess skin.
- Free nipple graft: For gigantomastia or very long nipple transfer distances; sensation and breastfeeding are lost.
- Liposuction-only reduction: For fatty breasts with good skin and nipple position, giving a modest reduction with tiny scars.
Was passiert während Ihrer Behandlung
The operation takes 2 to 4 hours under general anaesthetic with 1 night in hospital. Many women notice the relief of weight from their shoulders on waking. Drains, if used, are removed in 1 to 2 days. Pain is moderate and controlled with tablets.
Vorbereitung auf Ihre Reise
Plan for 8 to 10 days in Istanbul. Your surgeon reviews photographs and your medical history before you book, and you meet in person the day before surgery for examination, marking and consent with a professional interpreter.
Expect 2 weeks off desk work and 4 weeks off physical jobs. Wear a soft support bra day and night for 6 weeks and avoid lifting and running during that time. Small wound openings at the T-junction under the breast are common and heal with dressings. Swelling settles and the breasts drop into shape over 3 to 6 months. Scars fade over 12 to 18 months.
- Zurück zur alltäglichen Aktivität: 2 Wochen
- When results show: Relief immediately; final shape at 3 to 6 months
- How long they last: Permanent, unless weight gain, pregnancy or hormones enlarge the breasts again

Häufig gestellte Fragen
What cup size will I be?
You can discuss a target, such as a proportionate C or D, but bra sizing varies between brands and surgeons work by proportion and tissue weight. Be wary of a firm promise.
Can the breasts grow back?
The removed gland does not regrow, but remaining tissue responds to weight gain, pregnancy and hormones. Reduction in teenagers carries a higher chance of regrowth.
Will my insurer at home pay?
Some insurers fund reduction for documented symptoms. They may not cover surgery abroad, so check before you travel.
Why is the tissue sent to the lab?
Rarely, an unsuspected abnormality is found. It is routine good practice, and you should receive the report.
