Clinical Neurophysiology

Clinical neurophysiology is the diagnostic specialty that records electrical activity from the brain, nerves and muscles. It supplies tests for neurologists, neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons; it does not itself offer treatment.

Its core tests are EEG for brain activity, nerve conduction studies and EMG for nerves and muscles, and evoked potentials for sensory pathways. The same team monitors nerve function during brain and spine operations.

• Evoked potentials: Visual, auditory and somatosensory responses show slowed conduction in the central pathways.
• Single-fibre EMG: The most sensitive test for myasthenia gravis.
• Polysomnography: Overnight sleep recording.

These tests fit easily into a short visit and are usually reported within a day or two. Video EEG telemetry needs 3 to 7 nights in hospital and works only if your attacks are frequent enough to be captured. Tests are most valuable when interpreted by the neurologist who will continue your care, so bring earlier recordings and reports.
