Dental Bone Grafts

A dental bone graft adds bone, or a bone substitute, to a part of the jaw that has become too thin or too low to hold an implant. Jaw bone shrinks after a tooth is lost, after gum disease or after infection, so grafting is common before implant treatment.

The graft acts as a scaffold that your own bone gradually grows into. It makes implants possible where they otherwise would not be. The limit is predictability: small grafts heal reliably, while large rebuilding of height is slower and less certain, and it always lengthens treatment.

What Dental Bone Grafts involves

A cone beam CT scan shows how much bone is missing. Under local anaesthetic the gum is lifted to expose the defect. Graft material is packed into the socket or against the ridge and is usually covered with a collagen membrane that keeps gum tissue out while bone forms. Large blocks are fixed with tiny screws. The gum is released and stitched closed without tension. For a sinus lift, a small window is made in the side of the upper jaw, the sinus lining is gently raised and graft is placed beneath it. Healing takes 3 to 9 months before implants, unless a small graft is placed at the same time as the implant.

Who is a good candidate for Dental Bone Grafts?

Your dentist suggests grafting only when the scan shows that an implant would not be fully surrounded by bone.

• You are having a tooth removed and plan an implant later, so the socket is worth preserving
• Your ridge is too narrow for an implant after years with a gap
• You need upper back implants and the sinus floor is low

• You do not smoke or can stop for the healing period
