An early pregnancy ultrasound is a scan done in the first trimester, usually between 6 and 10 weeks after the first day of the last period. It uses sound waves, not radiation, to look at the uterus and ovaries.
Its purpose is to confirm that the pregnancy is inside the womb, check for a heartbeat, count the number of embryos and date the pregnancy. It is not a screening test for chromosomal conditions or structural abnormalities; those come later.
What Early Pregnancy Ultrasound shows
The scan shows the gestational sac, the yolk sac and the embryo, and measures the crown to rump length, which dates the pregnancy to within about 5 days. A heartbeat is normally visible on a vaginal scan from around 6 weeks. It shows whether there is one embryo or more, and in twins whether they share a placenta. It can detect a pregnancy growing outside the womb, a pregnancy that has stopped developing, bleeding around the sac, fibroids and ovarian cysts. Before 6 weeks a normal pregnancy may be too small to see clearly, so an early scan can be inconclusive.
When Early Pregnancy Ultrasound is recommended
- Bleeding or pain in early pregnancy
- A previous ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or tubal surgery
- Pregnancy after IVF or other fertility treatment, usually about 2 weeks after a positive test
- Uncertain dates or irregular cycles
- Pregnancy with a coil in place
- Reassurance before travelling home after fertility treatment abroad
Grenzen und Situationen, in denen ein anderer Test besser ist:
- It cannot rule out chromosomal conditions; the combined test at 11 to 14 weeks or a cell-free DNA blood test addresses that
- It cannot assess the baby's organs; the anatomy scan at 18 to 22 weeks does
- Scanning before 6 weeks often leads to uncertainty and a repeat scan
- A single scan cannot always distinguish a very early pregnancy from a failing one
Wie man sich vorbereitet
- Bring the date of your last period and any fertility treatment dates
- For an abdominal scan a comfortably full bladder helps; for a vaginal scan the bladder should be empty
- Bring earlier scan reports and blood hCG results if you have them
- Tell the doctor about any bleeding, pain or previous ectopic pregnancy
Was passiert während des Tests
The scan takes 10 to 20 minutes. Early on, a vaginal scan gives the clearest picture: a slim covered probe is placed gently in the vagina, which may feel uncomfortable but should not hurt and does not harm the pregnancy. After about 8 to 10 weeks an abdominal scan with gel on the lower tummy is often enough. You can usually watch the screen and have someone with you.
Ergebnisse und nächste Schritte
The doctor explains the findings during or straight after the scan, and you receive a written report with images and measurements. If the pregnancy is too early to confirm, a repeat scan in 7 to 14 days and sometimes paired hCG blood tests are arranged. Findings that suggest an ectopic pregnancy are acted on the same day.
- Test time: 10 to 20 minutes
- Results ready: Immediately, with a written report
- Zurück zur alltäglichen Aktivität: Keine
Sicherheit und Risiken
- No known harm to mother or embryo from diagnostic ultrasound used as recommended
- Brief discomfort from the vaginal probe
- Anxiety from inconclusive findings when the scan is done very early
- Latex allergy: say so beforehand, as the probe cover can be changed
Arranging Early Pregnancy Ultrasound in Türkiye
Nobody needs to travel for this scan. It is relevant mainly if you are already in Istanbul for fertility treatment or on a longer stay and want pregnancy location and viability confirmed before flying home. Ongoing antenatal care should be set up with a midwife or obstetrician where you live.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Is a vaginal scan safe in early pregnancy?
Yes. The probe sits in the vagina and does not touch the cervix opening or the pregnancy. It does not cause miscarriage.
No heartbeat was seen at 6 weeks. What does that mean?
Often only that it is earlier than thought. Doctors use strict size criteria and a repeat scan before diagnosing a pregnancy loss.
Can I fly after the scan?
Flying does not harm a normal early pregnancy. If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected or you have heavy bleeding, do not fly until a doctor has cleared you.
