FibroScan is a brand of transient elastography, a quick ultrasound-based test that measures how stiff your liver is. A stiffer liver suggests more scarring (fibrosis). Most machines also give a CAP score that estimates how much fat the liver holds.
It offers a painless way to stage liver disease without a needle. It gives a number, not a diagnosis of the cause, and the reading can be falsely high in some situations.
What FibroScan (Liver Elastography) shows
The probe sends a small vibration into the liver and measures how fast the wave travels; the result is reported in kilopascals. Roughly, values below about 7 kPa suggest little or no fibrosis and values above about 12 to 14 kPa suggest advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, but the cut-offs differ by disease, so a hepatologist interprets it alongside blood tests. The CAP score, in decibels per metre, grades fatty change. The test is used in fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis B and C, alcohol-related liver disease and to follow people over time.
When FibroScan (Liver Elastography) is recommended
- Fatty liver found on ultrasound, especially with diabetes or obesity
- Chronic hepatitis B or C, before and after antiviral treatment
- Long-term heavy alcohol use
- Persistently abnormal liver blood tests
- Monitoring while on liver-toxic medicines such as methotrexate
- Follow-up of known fibrosis without repeated biopsies
Grenzen und Situationen, in denen ein anderer Test besser ist:
- Fluid in the abdomen (ascites), which blocks the wave
- Readings are unreliable during acute hepatitis, heart failure, bile duct blockage or soon after a meal
- Severe obesity may need the XL probe and can still fail
- It cannot replace biopsy when the cause of liver disease is unclear
- Not used in pregnancy or over an implanted cardiac device, as a precaution by the maker
Wie man sich vorbereitet
- Do not eat or drink anything except water for 3 hours beforehand
- Wear a top that lifts easily to expose the right ribs
- Bring recent liver blood tests and ultrasound reports
- Tell staff if you have a pacemaker or may be pregnant
Was passiert während des Tests
You lie on your back with your right arm behind your head. The operator places a gel-tipped probe between the ribs on the right side and takes at least ten readings. You feel a light flick against the skin each time, nothing more. The whole visit takes 10 to 15 minutes, needs no sedation and you can leave straight away.
Ergebnisse und nächste Schritte
The numbers are available immediately. A reliable report states the median stiffness, the variability between readings (IQR) and the CAP score. A liver specialist then puts this together with your blood tests: low values usually mean reassurance and lifestyle advice, intermediate values mean repeat testing or further scores, and high values lead to checks for cirrhosis complications, such as endoscopy for varices and liver cancer surveillance.
- Test time: 10 to 15 minutes
- Results ready: Immediately
- Zurück zur alltäglichen Aktivität: Keine
Sicherheit und Risiken
- No known physical risk; it is ultrasound based and uses no radiation
- Falsely high readings leading to unnecessary worry if done after eating or during a liver flare
- Failed or unreliable readings in a minority of people, mostly with a high body mass index
Arranging FibroScan (Liver Elastography) in Türkiye
It is not a reason to travel on its own. It fits well inside a check-up or a hepatology consultation, for example before bariatric surgery or when reviewing long-standing hepatitis. Results are same day, so one visit is enough.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Does it replace a liver biopsy?
Often, for staging fibrosis. Biopsy is still needed when the cause is uncertain or when results conflict.
Can fibrosis improve?
Yes. Stiffness often falls after hepatitis C cure, alcohol abstinence or weight loss, which is one reason the test is repeated.
How often should it be repeated?
Commonly every 1 to 3 years in stable fatty liver disease, more often if the value is borderline. Your specialist sets the interval.
