General Ophthalmology

General ophthalmology is the first point of specialist eye care. A general ophthalmologist examines the whole eye, diagnoses the common conditions, prescribes glasses and medication, performs routine procedures such as cataract surgery and minor lid operations, and refers to subspecialists in retina, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics or paediatrics when needed.

Many eye diseases are silent until late, so a large part of the work is detection: checking pressure, optic nerves and retinas in people who feel fine. For older adults the same visit often covers several age-related problems at once, such as cataract, dry eye, glaucoma risk and macular change.
