Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is an operation to reduce the size of the labia minora, the inner lips of the vulva, and sometimes to even out two sides that differ. Excess clitoral hood skin can be reduced at the same time.

It relieves rubbing, pinching and discomfort in tight clothing, sport or sex, and addresses self-consciousness about appearance. It does not tighten the vagina or improve sexual response, and because normal labia vary widely, it is a personal choice and never a medical necessity.

What Labiaplasty involves

With you awake and using a mirror, the surgeon agrees how much tissue you want to keep; most advise leaving at least 1 centimetre of labial width. After marking and local anaesthetic, the excess is removed by one of two main methods. In the trim technique, the protruding edge is cut away along its length, which also removes the darker border. In the wedge technique, a V-shaped piece is taken from the thickest part and the edges are joined, preserving the natural rim. The wound is closed with fine dissolving stitches in layers. Hood reduction, if planned, removes small folds of skin beside the clitoris without touching the clitoris itself.

Who is a good candidate for Labiaplasty?

For adult women whose labia cause physical symptoms or persistent distress.

• Chafing or pain when cycling, riding, running or wearing fitted clothing
• Labia that are pulled or pinched during sex

• Wedge resection: Keeps the natural edge and colour. Slightly higher chance of the wound separating at the join.
• De-epithelialisation: Removes only surface skin from the centre of the labium. For small reductions.
• Clitoral hood reduction: Added when hood folds would look prominent once the labia are smaller.

The operation takes 45 to 90 minutes under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation, or a short general anaesthetic, as a day case. Afterwards the area is swollen and stings, particularly when passing urine for the first few days. Rinsing with water while urinating helps.

Swelling peaks at 2 to 3 days and can look alarming; most settles by 2 weeks, with the last of it taking 6 to 8 weeks. Use cold packs, loose cotton underwear and gentle rinsing. Most women return to desk work within 3 to 5 days. Avoid sex, tampons, cycling, swimming and gym work for 4 to 6 weeks. Stitches dissolve within 2 to 4 weeks. Final appearance is judged at 3 to 6 months.
