Microneedling

Microneedling makes thousands of tiny, controlled punctures in the skin with fine sterile needles. The skin responds by producing new collagen and elastin, which gradually improves texture, scars and fine lines.

It is a well-studied, low-risk treatment that is suitable for all skin tones, where many lasers are not. Results build slowly over a course.

What Microneedling involves

After numbing cream, the practitioner passes a motorised pen over the skin. Needle depth is adjusted by area and purpose, from about half a millimetre for glow and pigmentation to two millimetres or more for acne scars. Serums, PRP or PRF may be applied during treatment because the channels stay open for a short time.

Who is a good candidate for Microneedling?

It is a good first step for texture problems, especially in darker skin.

• Acne scars, particularly rolling and shallow boxcar scars
• Enlarged pores, uneven texture and fine lines
• Stretch marks
• Any skin tone, including skin that pigments easily

Numbing takes about 30 minutes and the treatment itself 30 to 45. The skin looks and feels sunburnt afterwards, with pinpoint bleeding at deeper settings.

Redness lasts one to three days, followed by mild dryness or flaking. Use only gentle cleanser, plain moisturiser and sunscreen for the first days and avoid make-up for 24 hours. Improvement appears from about four weeks and continues for three to six months after the course.
