Musculoskeletal radiology is imaging of bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, read by a radiologist who specialises in these structures. The tools are X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT and bone density (DEXA) scanning, plus image guided injections and biopsies.

Good imaging confirms a diagnosis and guides surgery. Its main limit is that scans show many age related changes that cause no symptoms, so results only make sense alongside a clinical examination.

What Musculoskeletal Radiology shows

X-rays show fractures, alignment, arthritis and implant position, and should be taken standing for knees, hips, feet and the spine. Ultrasound shows tendons, muscle tears, fluid, cysts and nerves in real time, and guides injections. MRI shows cartilage, menisci, ligaments, labrum, bone marrow swelling, stress fractures, discs, nerve roots, infection and tumours. An MR arthrogram, with dye injected into the joint first, improves detail of the hip and shoulder labrum. CT shows fine bone detail for complex fractures, rotational measurements and surgical planning, including 3D models. DEXA measures bone density to diagnose osteoporosis.

Was passiert während des Tests

An X-ray takes 5 to 10 minutes. Ultrasound takes 15 to 20 minutes with gel and a handheld probe, and you may be asked to move the joint. MRI takes 20 to 45 minutes per body part; you lie still in a tunnel that makes loud knocking sounds, with ear protection. CT takes about 5 minutes. For an arthrogram, local anaesthetic is given and dye is injected into the joint under guidance before the scan, which causes a feeling of fullness.

Images are available immediately and a specialist report usually follows within 24 to 48 hours, sooner if urgent. Ultrasound findings are often explained on the spot. You should receive the images in DICOM format and the report in English. An orthopaedic surgeon then matches the findings to your examination and explains whether they account for your symptoms and what the options are.

Imaging alone is rarely a reason to travel, but same day or next day access to MRI and CT is useful when you come for an orthopaedic opinion, a check-up or surgery planning. A typical pathway is consultation, imaging the same or next day, and a results discussion within 1 to 3 days. If you already have good recent scans, bring them; repeating them is often unnecessary.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Which scan is best for my knee or shoulder?

Usually a standing X-ray first, then MRI if a soft tissue injury is suspected. Ultrasound is excellent for the rotator cuff and superficial tendons.

My MRI report lists many abnormalities. Should I worry?

Not necessarily. Disc bulges, meniscal fraying and tendon changes are common without symptoms after age 40. Ask which findings match your pain.

Can I have an MRI with a joint replacement?

Yes. Modern joint implants are safe in MRI, although the image near the metal is distorted.

Is open MRI as good?

Open or wide bore scanners help with claustrophobia. Lower field open units give less detail, which may matter for small structures.
