Neonatal monitoring is the continuous observation and support of newborn babies in the first 28 days of life, in a special care baby unit or a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It serves babies born early, babies who are small or unwell, and those who need surgery.
Monitors record heart rate, breathing, oxygen saturation, temperature and blood pressure around the clock, so that problems are treated within minutes. This is emergency and inpatient care determined by where the baby is born. It is not something a family can plan to travel for after birth.
Bedingungen, die dieser Service betreut
- Prematurity (birth before 37 weeks) and low birth weight
- Respiratory distress syndrome and transient fast breathing
- Neonatal jaundice needing phototherapy
- Suspected or proven infection (sepsis)
- Low blood sugar, especially in babies of diabetic mothers
- Lack of oxygen around birth (hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy)
- Apnoea and slow heart rate of prematurity
- Congenital heart disease and malformations needing surgery
- Feeding difficulties and poor weight gain
Tests, die Ihnen möglicherweise angeboten werden
- Continuous cardiorespiratory and saturation monitoring: Adhesive sensors track heart, breathing and oxygen levels.
- Blood gas, glucose and bilirubin tests: Tiny heel-prick samples guide breathing support, feeding and jaundice treatment.
- Cranial ultrasound: A scan through the soft spot looks for bleeding in premature babies.
- Echocardiography: Checks heart structure and the duct that should close after birth.
- Newborn screening: Heel-prick metabolic screen, hearing test and pulse oximetry screen for heart defects.
- Eye examination for retinopathy of prematurity: Done from about 4 weeks in very premature babies.
Behandlungen verfügbar
- Temperature control and incubator care: Small babies lose heat fast and are nursed in warmed, humidified incubators.
- Breathing support: From nasal CPAP and high-flow oxygen to ventilation and surfactant for immature lungs.
- Phototherapy: Blue light that breaks down bilirubin in jaundice; exchange transfusion in severe cases.
- Intravenous nutrition and tube feeding: Bridges the gap until a baby can suck and swallow, with expressed breast milk preferred.
- Antibiotics: Started quickly when infection is suspected.
- Therapeutic cooling: For 72 hours after significant oxygen lack at birth, in designated centres.
- Kangaroo care and family-integrated care: Skin-to-skin contact and parents' involvement improve outcomes.
Wann Sie eine Fachmeinung einholen sollten
- Your obstetrician expects an early birth, a small baby or a baby with a known condition: ask what level of neonatal unit the hospital has
- A newborn at home feeds poorly, is floppy, breathes fast or grunts, or has a fever: seek emergency care
- Jaundice in the first 24 hours of life, or jaundice that is spreading to the legs
- You are planning a birth abroad and need to know the neonatal facilities
Reisen nach Türkiye für diese Pflege
A sick newborn cannot travel for care except by specialised neonatal transport between hospitals. The practical relevance for international families is planning ahead. If you intend to give birth in Istanbul, or you are in late pregnancy while in the city, choose a hospital with a level 3 NICU on site, ask whether parents can stay, and check that your insurance covers neonatal intensive care, since a long stay for a premature baby can be very expensive. After discharge, follow-up of growth, development, eyes and hearing continues for years at home.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
How long do premature babies stay in hospital?
As a rough guide, until around their original due date. Babies go home when they breathe unaided, keep warm in a cot, feed well and gain weight.
Can I breastfeed a baby in intensive care?
Yes. You will be helped to express milk from the first hours, and it is given by tube until the baby can feed directly.
When can a newborn fly?
Healthy term babies can usually fly after the first week or two. Premature babies or those who needed oxygen need a paediatrician's clearance.
Are the alarms a sign something is wrong?
Monitors are set to be sensitive, and most alarms are caused by movement. Staff will explain what each one means.
