Neuroradiology is the branch of radiology that images the brain, spine, head and neck. Neuroradiologists perform and interpret MRI, CT and angiography, and their report is often what decides a diagnosis or an operation.
Subtle findings are easy to over-read or miss, so review by a subspecialist can change management. The interventional side of the specialty, which treats aneurysms and stroke through catheters, is described on its own page.
Bedingungen, die dieser Service betreut
- Brain tumours
- Stroke and blood vessel narrowing
- Aneurysms and vascular malformations
- Multiple sclerosis and other white matter disease
- Epilepsie
- Dementia
- Disc disease, spinal stenosis and cord compression
- Pituitary, skull base, orbit and inner ear disorders
Tests, die Ihnen möglicherweise angeboten werden
- MRI brain and spine: The main tool, with no radiation; contrast is added when tumour, infection or inflammation is suspected.
- Advanced MRI: Perfusion, spectroscopy, diffusion tractography and functional MRI to characterise tumours and map speech and movement areas before surgery.
- Epilepsy-protocol 3 Tesla MRI: Thin-slice sequences that find small lesions missed on standard scans.
- CT, CT angiography and CT perfusion: Fast assessment of bleeding, fractures and vessels.
- MR angiography and venography: Show arteries and veins without a catheter.
- Catheter angiography: The most detailed vessel study, used for treatment planning.
- PET-CT or PET-MRI: For dementia, tumour recurrence and epilepsy surgery planning.
Behandlungen verfügbar
- Second-opinion reporting: A subspecialist re-reads your existing images and compares them with earlier scans.
- Image-guided spinal injections: Nerve root blocks and facet injections under CT or X-ray.
- CT-guided biopsy: Sampling of spine and skull base lesions.
- Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty: Cement injection for painful vertebral fractures, in selected cases.
- Guided lumbar puncture and blood patch: For difficult punctures and spinal fluid leaks.
Wann Sie eine Fachmeinung einholen sollten
- A report that is vague, such as non-specific white matter lesions
- A lesion found by chance and conflicting advice about it
- Before committing to brain or spine surgery
- Epilepsy with a normal standard MRI
- Wanting old and new scans compared by one expert

Imaging is quick: most scans are done within a day or two with reports in 24 to 48 hours, so it is normally combined with a specialist consultation or check-up. Often you do not need to travel at all, since your existing images can be reviewed remotely if you send the full DICOM files. Tell the team about implants, kidney disease, pregnancy or claustrophobia.
Is a 3 Tesla MRI always better?
It gives finer detail for epilepsy, pituitary and small vessel work. For many questions a good 1.5 Tesla scan is sufficient.
Is MRI contrast safe?
Gadolinium agents are safe for most people. They are used cautiously in severe kidney disease and avoided in pregnancy unless essential.
Why do my reports disagree?
Interpretation involves judgment. A subspecialist reading with full clinical information is the most reliable.
