Oral pathology, together with oral medicine, is the area of dentistry that diagnoses diseases of the lining of the mouth, the jawbones and the salivary glands. For a patient it means having an ulcer, patch, lump or persistent soreness examined and, where needed, a sample taken and read under a microscope.
Most mouth lesions are harmless. The purpose of a specialist assessment is to separate those from the small number that are precancerous or cancerous. A biopsy gives a firm answer for the piece sampled, but some conditions need repeat checks for years.

A biopsy is a short procedure and can be done during a trip made for other treatment, with the report in about 5 to 10 days, sent on if you have already left. It is rarely sensible to fly only for this: a suspicious lesion should be seen quickly near home, because if it proves serious your treatment and years of follow-up will be there. Chronic conditions such as lichen planus also need a local clinician.
