Pectus excavatum, or funnel chest, is an inward dip of the breastbone and rib cartilages. It is the most common chest wall deformity, affecting about 1 in 400 people, and it often deepens during the teenage growth spurt. Treatment ranges from a vacuum bell worn on the chest to the Nuss procedure, in which a curved metal bar is placed behind the breastbone to push it forward.
Correction improves the shape of the chest and, in deeper deformities that press on the heart, can improve exercise tolerance and breathlessness. The bar stays in for about 3 years and is removed in a second operation. The first weeks are painful, the final shape is not always perfectly symmetrical, and mild deformities without symptoms do not need surgery.
What Pectus Excavatum Treatment (Nuss Procedure) involves
Assessment includes a chest CT or MRI to calculate the Haller index (chest width divided by the distance from breastbone to spine; above about 3.25 is considered significant), an echocardiogram, lung function tests and sometimes a cardiopulmonary exercise test.
