A paediatric check-up is a planned health review of a child who is not currently ill. The paediatrician measures growth, examines the child from head to toe, reviews development, vision, hearing and vaccinations, and talks with parents about sleep, diet, behaviour and safety.
Unlike adult check-ups, it involves few laboratory tests. Healthy children rarely benefit from broad blood panels or scans, and a good check-up is defined by careful examination and conversation. Tests are added only for a reason.
What Paediatric Check-Up shows
The check-up shows whether height, weight, head circumference and BMI are following the expected centiles and whether puberty is on time. It screens for problems that are easy to miss: lazy eye and refractive errors, hearing loss, heart murmurs, undescended testes, hip and spine problems such as scoliosis, dental decay, high blood pressure and delays in speech, movement or social development. In some age groups or risk situations it includes a blood count for iron deficiency, vitamin D, urine testing or lipid screening.
When Paediatric Check-Up is recommended
- Babies and toddlers at the intervals of the routine schedule (for example at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months)
- Children once a year from age 3 through adolescence
- Before starting nursery, school or competitive sport
- Families who have moved countries and need vaccination records reviewed and caught up
- Children with a family history of early heart disease, high cholesterol or inherited conditions
- Teenagers, who benefit from a confidential discussion of mood, sleep and risk behaviours
Grenzen und Situationen, in denen ein anderer Test besser ist:
- A sick child needs a sick visit, not a check-up
- Full-body scans, tumour markers and wide allergy panels have no place in screening healthy children
- A sports check-up with a normal ECG cannot exclude every rare heart condition
- One-off visits abroad cannot replace continuous growth tracking by the same clinic
Wie man sich vorbereitet
- Bring the vaccination booklet and any previous growth measurements
- Write down your questions and any family history of illness
- Bring glasses, hearing aids and a list of medicines or supplements
- If blood tests are planned, ask whether your child should fast
- Tell your child honestly what will happen, including whether a needle is involved
Was passiert während des Tests
The visit takes 30 to 60 minutes. A nurse measures height, weight, head size in infants and blood pressure from age 3. The paediatrician examines heart, lungs, abdomen, genitals, hips, spine, skin, ears, throat and teeth, and checks milestones through play and questions. Vision and hearing screening suit the child's age. Any vaccine due can be given, and a blood sample is taken only if indicated.
Ergebnisse und nächste Schritte
Most findings are discussed straight away. Blood and urine results follow within 1 to 2 days. You should receive a written summary with growth charts, vaccines given and any referrals, for example to an eye specialist, dentist or speech therapist. Findings that need action are passed to your regular paediatrician.
- Test time: 30 to 60 minutes
- Results ready: Same day; laboratory results in 1 to 2 days
- Zurück zur alltäglichen Aktivität: Keine
Sicherheit und Risiken
- Brief pain and bruising from a blood test or vaccination
- Mild fever or a sore limb after vaccines
- False alarms from unnecessary tests, leading to anxiety and further investigation
- False reassurance if the check-up replaces attention to new symptoms later
Arranging Paediatric Check-Up in Türkiye
A check-up is not a reason to fly a child anywhere, since its value lies in repetition by one clinic over the years. If your family is in Istanbul anyway, for a holiday or for a parent's treatment, a check-up can be a convenient chance to update measurements, screen vision and hearing, and review vaccinations. Note that vaccine schedules differ between countries, so bring the record and share the summary with your doctor at home.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Does my healthy child need blood tests every year?
No. Routine annual blood tests are not recommended. Iron and, in some cases, lipid screening are done at particular ages or with risk factors.
At what age should eyes be tested?
Vision screening is advised between ages 3 and 5 to catch lazy eye while it is still treatable, and earlier if there is a squint.
Can vaccines from another country's schedule be given?
Often yes, but it should be coordinated with your home schedule to avoid duplication or gaps.
Will my teenager be seen alone?
Part of the visit is usually offered in private, which encourages honest conversation. Parents are involved in any decisions.
