Paediatric Ophthalmology

Paediatric ophthalmology cares for children's eyes from birth through the teenage years. A child's visual system is still developing, so problems that would merely blur an adult's vision can permanently limit a child's sight if not treated in time. The team usually includes a paediatric ophthalmologist, an orthoptist and anaesthetists experienced with children.

Most of the work is glasses, squint and lazy eye (amblyopia), where success depends on steady treatment over months and years rather than on one procedure. The service also handles rarer, serious conditions: childhood cataract and glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity, retinal disease in children and retinoblastoma, which need highly specialised centres.

• Squint surgery: Aligns the eyes once glasses and amblyopia treatment are under way.
• Tear duct probing: For watering that persists beyond about 12 months.
• Childhood cataract surgery: Time-critical in babies, and followed by years of optical correction and patching.
• Congenital glaucoma surgery: Goniotomy or trabeculotomy, with lifelong monitoring.
• Ptosis correction: Earlier if the lid covers the pupil and threatens vision.
