PRP Therapy

PRP, platelet-rich plasma, is made from a small sample of your own blood, concentrated so that it contains several times the normal number of platelets, and injected into the scalp or skin to stimulate repair.

It is used for thinning hair, to support hair transplant results and for skin quality. Evidence is best for early pattern hair loss and results vary from person to person; it slows and thickens, it does not regrow hair on a bald scalp.

What PRP Therapy involves

Between 10 and 30 millilitres of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma layer rich in platelets. This is injected in a grid across the thinning scalp, or into the skin of the face, often with microneedling. Platelets release growth factors that are thought to prolong the growth phase of hair follicles and encourage collagen.

The scalp feels tender and tight for a day. Avoid washing your hair until the next morning and skip anti-inflammatory painkillers for a few days, since inflammation is part of how it works. Less shedding is usually noticed first, at six to eight weeks; thickening is judged at three to six months.
