Scalp micropigmentation, SMP, is a specialised cosmetic tattoo. Thousands of tiny pigment dots are placed in the upper dermis of the scalp to mimic closely shaved hair follicles, or to reduce the contrast between hair and scalp in thinning areas.

It gives an immediate visual effect of a shaved head with a hairline, or of fuller hair, and it hides scars well. It adds no hair and no texture, so it looks most convincing with very short hair or as a shading beneath existing hair.

What Scalp Micropigmentation involves

At consultation the practitioner designs the hairline with you and matches the pigment shade to your hair stubble and skin tone, generally choosing a diluted black or grey-brown. Using a fine single or triple micro-needle on a digital machine, they place dots about 0.5 to 2 mm deep, shallower than a body tattoo, at varying spacing and shade. The first session lays a light foundation. After 7 to 14 days of healing a second session adds density and blends, and a third fine-tunes. Working in layers keeps the dots small and avoids a flat, painted look.

Who is a good candidate for Scalp Micropigmentation?

SMP suits people who want a low-maintenance cosmetic solution and accept keeping the hair short or using it as a background shade.

Each session takes 2 to 4 hours. No injection anaesthesia is normally needed; numbing cream can be applied. Most people describe it as a prickling sensation at around 3 to 5 out of 10, more sensitive at the temples and in scars. You can leave straight afterwards with a slightly red scalp.

Redness settles in 1 to 3 days. For the first 4 days keep the scalp dry and avoid sweating; then wash gently. Avoid swimming, saunas, shaving with a blade and strong sun for about 2 weeks after each session. Dots look darker and larger for a few days, then shrink and soften as the skin heals. Long-term, use sunscreen or a hat, because ultraviolet light fades pigment faster.

• When results show: Immediately; settled about 4 weeks after the last session
