Bone Diseases: An Overview

Bone is living tissue that is constantly broken down and rebuilt. Bone diseases disturb that balance or damage bone directly. The main groups are metabolic diseases (osteoporosis, osteomalacia and rickets, Paget disease, bone disease from kidney failure or overactive parathyroid glands), infection (osteomyelitis), loss of blood supply (avascular necrosis), tumours (benign, primary malignant and spread from other cancers) and inherited disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta.

These conditions have different causes and treatments, so an accurate diagnosis comes first. Osteoporosis is by far the most common and is silent until a bone breaks. Many bone diseases can be controlled well with medication; lost height or a collapsed joint surface cannot be put back, which is the argument for finding them early.

Symptoms

Causes and risk factors

Osteoporosis follows oestrogen loss after menopause, ageing, long-term steroid treatment, low body weight, smoking, heavy alcohol use and conditions such as coeliac disease or overactive thyroid. Osteomalacia and rickets come from lack of vitamin D, through little sun exposure, covered skin, malabsorption or kidney and liver disease. Paget disease has genetic and possibly viral contributors. Avascular necrosis is linked to steroids, alcohol, sickle cell disease and hip fracture. Osteomyelitis is usually bacterial. Most cancers found in adult bone have spread from the breast, prostate, lung, kidney or thyroid.

How it is diagnosed

Treatment options

When it is urgent

Get emergency care locally for a suspected fracture, inability to bear weight after a fall, bone pain with high fever, or back pain with leg weakness, numbness around the saddle area or loss of bladder or bowel control. Relentless night pain with weight loss needs prompt investigation, not a long wait.

Travelling to Türkiye for treatment

A visit suits a defined piece of work: a bone health assessment with DEXA and blood tests, a second opinion on scans or a biopsy result, or planned surgery such as a hip replacement for avascular necrosis. Osteoporosis treatment runs for years with periodic monitoring, and bone infection needs weeks of supervised antibiotics, so both need a doctor near home. Bone cancer care should be led by a specialist sarcoma team; a trip may contribute an opinion or an operation within that plan.

Send your reports, scans and a short history and a Clinic-Y coordinator replies within 24 hours with suitable teams and written, all-inclusive proposals side by side. Reviewing your case is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is osteoporosis the same as osteoarthritis?

No. Osteoporosis is thin, fragile bone and causes no pain until a fracture. Osteoarthritis is wear of the joint and causes pain and stiffness.

Who should have a bone density scan?

Women over 65, men over 70, and younger people with a fragility fracture, long-term steroid use or other strong risk factors.

Does bone pain mean cancer?

Usually not. Most persistent bone pain has a benign cause, but unexplained night pain should be investigated.

Can weak bones be rebuilt?

Medication can increase density and roughly halve fracture risk in many cases, though bone does not return to youthful strength.
