Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid gel to add volume, define the border or correct asymmetry of the lips, with a result that is visible immediately.

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in skin and can be dissolved if needed, which is the main reason it has replaced permanent fillers. Restraint gives the best lips: half to one millilitre is usual for a first treatment.

What Lip Filler involves

After numbing cream or a dental block, the doctor places small amounts of gel with a fine needle or a blunt cannula along the border and into the body of the lip, shaping as they go. Different gels have different firmness; a soft, flexible product is chosen for lips so they move naturally.

Who is a good candidate for Lip Filler?

Good results respect your own proportions: the lower lip is normally a little fuller than the upper.

What happens during your treatment

The treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes. Lips swell straight away, often unevenly, and may bruise. You see the shape immediately but not the final size.

Preparing for your trip

One visit is enough. Swelling is worst on days one to three, so avoid scheduling it the day before a flight home if you would rather not travel swollen, and allow for a review at two weeks, in Istanbul or with a doctor at home.

• Tell the doctor about medication, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any history of cold sores, keloid scars or autoimmune disease
• Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers for a few days beforehand if your own doctor agrees, to reduce bruising
• Arrive without make-up on the treatment area and avoid sunbeds and strong sun for two weeks before

Recovery and results

Ice gently, avoid exercise, alcohol and heat for 24 hours and do not massage unless told to. Small lumps usually soften within two weeks, which is when the result is judged.

• Back to everyday activity: 1 to 3 days of swelling
• When results show: Immediately, settled at 2 weeks
• How long they last: 6 to 12 months

Safety, risks and revision policy

The lips have a rich blood supply, which is why this should be done by a doctor who carries hyaluronidase and knows how to use it:

• Swelling and bruising for several days
• Lumps, asymmetry or migration of filler above the lip border
• Cold sore reactivation
• Blockage of a blood vessel, causing pain and pale or mottled skin; this is an emergency that must be treated at once to prevent tissue loss
• Late swelling or nodules, which are uncommon
