PRF Treatment

PRF, platelet-rich fibrin, is a newer form of platelet therapy made from your own blood without any additive. Spun slowly, it keeps more white cells and forms a soft fibrin gel that releases growth factors over about a week rather than a few hours.

It is used under the eyes, for skin texture and for hair thinning. Like PRP it is regenerative rather than volumising: improvement is gradual and subtle, and the research base is still small.

What PRF Treatment involves

A small blood sample is spun at low speed in a plain tube. The yellow layer is drawn up and must be injected within minutes, before it sets. It is placed with a fine needle or cannula into the tear trough and cheeks, across the scalp, or spread over the skin after microneedling.

What happens during your treatment

Preparing for your trip

Treatment is given as a course of about three sessions four to six weeks apart. A single session on a short trip is possible but is unlikely to show the full effect unless you continue at home or on a later visit.

• Tell the doctor about medication, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any history of cold sores, keloid scars or autoimmune disease
• Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers for a few days beforehand if your own doctor agrees, to reduce bruising

Recovery and results

Expect puffiness and possibly bruising for a few days, particularly under the eyes. Sleep with your head raised on the first night. Skin quality improves gradually over two to three months as collagen forms.

Safety, risks and revision policy

Reactions to your own blood product are not expected. The risks are those of injection in delicate areas:

• Swelling and bruising, sometimes for a week under the eyes
• Lumps that settle over days
• Infection, which is rare
• Injection into a blood vessel, a rare risk of any injection around the eyes
• A result too subtle to notice
