Ceramic braces are fixed braces whose brackets are made of tooth-coloured or translucent ceramic instead of stainless steel. They move teeth in the same way as metal braces, with an archwire held in each bracket, but are far less visible at conversational distance.

What Ceramic Braces involves
Records come first: photographs, a digital scan or impressions, a panoramic X-ray and a side skull X-ray. At the fitting visit the teeth are polished, etched and primed, and each bracket is bonded with light-cured resin at a planned height. A thin flexible nickel-titanium wire is tied in with clear ties or clipped into self-ligating brackets. Every 4 to 8 weeks the wires are changed for progressively stiffer ones, bends are added, and elastics may be worn between the jaws to correct the bite. At the end the brackets are removed with special pliers, the remaining resin is polished away, and fixed or removable retainers are fitted.

Coffee, tea, red wine, curry and smoking stain the clear ties between visits, not the brackets themselves. After removal, retainers must be worn long term or the teeth will drift back.
