An appendectomy removes the appendix, a finger-sized pouch attached to the start of the large bowel. It is the standard treatment for appendicitis and is also done for appendix tumours, a mucus-filled appendix, or as a planned operation weeks after an abscess has been treated with antibiotics.
It cures appendicitis and prevents it coming back. It is nearly always an emergency operation done wherever you fall ill, so travelling for it only applies to planned interval surgery.
What Appendectomy (Appendix Removal) involves
In the laparoscopic method three small cuts of 5 to 12 mm are made, one at the navel. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide, a camera is inserted, and the appendix is found where the three muscle bands of the caecum meet. Its blood supply is sealed and divided, the base is closed with loops, clips or a stapler, and the appendix is removed in a bag to keep the wound clean. Any pus is washed out and the small cuts are closed. The open method uses a single 5 to 7 cm incision low on the right side and the same steps performed directly.
Who is a good candidate for Appendectomy (Appendix Removal)?
Anyone with confirmed appendicitis, and some people with a recurrent or chronically abnormal appendix on imaging.
- Acute appendicitis confirmed by examination, blood tests and ultrasound or CT
- Planned interval removal 6 to 8 weeks after an appendix abscess or mass
- An appendiceal mucocele or small tumour found on a scan
- Recurrent episodes after antibiotic-only treatment
It is usually not the right choice if:
- Uncomplicated appendicitis in someone who, after discussion, prefers a trial of antibiotics, accepting that about 3 in 10 recur within a year
- A walled-off abscess, which is usually drained and treated with antibiotics first
- Vague long-standing right-sided pain with normal imaging, where removal rarely helps
- Anyone with acute symptoms who is thinking of flying: go to the nearest emergency department
الخيارات التقنية
- Laparoscopic appendectomy: Standard in most hospitals: less pain, fewer wound infections and a quicker return to activity.
- Open appendectomy: Used when keyhole equipment is unavailable, in some advanced pregnancies, or after conversion because of dense inflammation.
- Single-incision laparoscopy: All instruments through the navel for a nearly hidden scar; results are similar.
- Right hemicolectomy: A bigger bowel resection needed when a tumour of the appendix is larger or involves the base.
ماذا يحدث خلال علاجك
The operation takes 30 to 60 minutes under general anaesthesia, longer if the appendix has burst. You receive antibiotics beforehand. Afterwards you may notice shoulder-tip ache from the gas for a day or two, and you can drink and eat lightly within hours.
الإعداد لرحلتك
Plan for 5 to 7 days for planned surgery in Istanbul. Your surgeon reviews photographs and your medical history before you book, and you meet in person the day before surgery for examination, marking and consent with a professional interpreter.
- Stop smoking and nicotine at least four weeks before and after surgery; it is the single biggest avoidable cause of wound problems
- Tell the team about every medicine and supplement you take; blood thinners, some herbal products and hormone treatment may need to be paused on your doctor's advice
- Arrange for someone to travel with you or to be reachable, and keep the first days at home free of work and lifting
- Book a changeable return flight; your surgeon confirms when you are fit to fly
التعافي والنتائج
After simple keyhole surgery most people go home within 24 hours, return to desk work in about a week and to sport or lifting in 2 to 4 weeks. After a perforated appendix expect 3 to 7 days in hospital on intravenous antibiotics and a slower recovery. Open surgery adds roughly a week to each stage.
- Back to everyday activity: 1 to 2 weeks
- When results show: Pain relief is immediate once the inflamed appendix is out
- How long they last: Permanent
سياسة السلامة والمخاطر والتنقيح
It is a safe, routine operation; risks rise if the appendix has already perforated.
- Wound infection, more likely with open surgery or perforation
- An abscess inside the abdomen or pelvis needing drainage or antibiotics
- Temporary bowel slowdown (ileus) with bloating and nausea
- Bleeding or injury to bowel or nearby structures, which is rare
- A leak from the appendix stump, which is rare
- Adhesions that may cause bowel obstruction years later
- A hernia at a port or incision site

الأسئلة المتكررة
Can I travel abroad for an appendectomy?
Only for planned interval surgery. Acute appendicitis needs treatment within hours where you are.
Can appendicitis be treated with antibiotics alone?
Sometimes, for uncomplicated cases confirmed on a scan. It avoids surgery in the short term but recurrence is common.
Do I need my appendix?
You can live normally without it. No dietary changes or long-term medicines are required.
When can I fly after surgery?
Commonly 4 to 7 days after uncomplicated keyhole surgery, once you are eating and the wounds are clean, if your surgeon agrees.
