Skin Cyst Removal

The doctor marks the lump and injects local anaesthetic around it. For standard excision a narrow ellipse of skin including the central pore is cut, and the sac is gently separated from surrounding tissue and lifted out intact. For minimal excision a 2 to 4 mm opening is made, the contents are expressed and the wall is teased out through the hole. The space is closed with a few dissolving deep stitches and fine skin stitches. If the lump looks at all unusual it is sent to the laboratory. An inflamed or infected cyst is drained first and removed several weeks later.

Who is a good candidate for Skin Cyst Removal?

Harmless cysts do not have to be removed. Removal is reasonable when a cyst bothers you or keeps causing trouble.

• A lump that catches on clothing, a comb or a bra strap
• Visible cysts on the face, neck or scalp
• A growing lump where a tissue diagnosis is wanted

It is usually not the right choice if:

• A cyst that is currently red, hot and painful; it needs drainage and settling first

• Any lump that is hard, fixed, fast growing or over 5 cm; this needs imaging before surgery
• Lumps near the midline of the face or spine in children, which need specialist assessment

Keep the dressing dry for 24 to 48 hours. Stitches come out at 5 to 7 days on the face and 10 to 14 days on the back or limbs; dissolving stitches can spare you a return visit. Avoid swimming and heavy exercise that stretches the area for 1 to 2 weeks. The scar is pink for a few months and fades over a year. Protect it from the sun.
