Embryo Freezing (Embryo Cryopreservation)

Embryo cryopreservation stores embryos created by IVF or ICSI at minus 196 degrees Celsius so that they can be thawed and transferred in a later cycle. Today this is done by vitrification, an ultra-rapid freezing method that avoids ice crystals.

It lets one egg collection yield several transfer attempts, makes single embryo transfer practical and allows transfer to be delayed for medical reasons. A frozen embryo is a chance, not a certainty: pregnancy rates per transfer depend mostly on the woman's age when the eggs were collected.

After egg collection and fertilisation, embryos are grown in the laboratory for 5 to 6 days to the blastocyst stage. Embryos of suitable quality that are not transferred fresh are graded, and in some cases a few cells are biopsied for genetic testing first. Each embryo is moved through increasing concentrations of cryoprotectant for a few minutes, loaded on a labelled carrier in a tiny droplet and plunged into liquid nitrogen. For a later frozen embryo transfer (FET), the lining of the womb is prepared in a natural cycle tracked by ultrasound or with oestrogen tablets followed by progesterone; the embryo is warmed on the morning of transfer and placed in the uterus through a soft catheter.

Who is a good candidate for Embryo Freezing (Embryo Cryopreservation)?

Freezing is either a by-product of IVF with spare embryos or a deliberate plan.

• Good-quality surplus embryos after a fresh transfer
• A high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, where a freeze-all cycle is safer

• A thin or out-of-phase womb lining, or raised progesterone, in the fresh cycle

It is usually not the right choice if:

• Single women, who under Turkish rules can freeze eggs for defined reasons but not embryos
• Couples who want donor eggs, donor sperm or surrogacy, none of which is legal in Türkiye
• Poor-quality embryos that are unlikely to survive warming
• Couples who have not agreed what should happen to the embryos on separation or death

Freezing happens in the laboratory and you feel nothing. A frozen embryo transfer takes 10 to 15 minutes, needs no anaesthetic and feels similar to a smear test, with a comfortably full bladder to help the ultrasound view. You rest briefly and leave.

For a frozen transfer, monitoring scans can often be done at home and shared, so you may need only 4 to 6 days in the city around the transfer. In Türkiye embryos may be stored for married couples, consent must be renewed every year by both partners, storage beyond 5 years needs ministry approval, and embryos are destroyed on divorce, on the death of either partner or on request.
