- List all medicines, including the contraceptive pill, steroids in any form and thyroid tablets
- For cycle-dependent hormones, note the day of your period
What happens during the test
Most tests are a simple blood draw taking a few minutes. Dynamic tests take longer. A short Synacthen test involves an injection and blood samples over 30 to 60 minutes. A dexamethasone suppression test means a tablet at 11 pm and a blood sample next morning. A glucose tolerance test takes 2 hours. A 24-hour urine collection is done at home or in your hotel with a supplied container.
Results and next steps
Routine hormones are reported the same or next day. Specialised assays such as metanephrines, aldosterone and renin, or IGF-1 may take 3 to 7 days. An endocrinologist should interpret the pattern, not single flagged values, and decides whether imaging such as a thyroid ultrasound, pituitary MRI or adrenal CT is the next step.

No. There is no meaningful all-hormone screen. Tests should follow from your symptoms and an examination.
My result is just outside the range. Is that a disease?

Does the pill affect results?
Yes. It raises binding proteins and suppresses LH, FSH and the ovaries' own hormones, so some tests are uninformative while you take it.
