Fractional CO2 Laser

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing vaporises thousands of microscopic columns of skin, leaving bridges of untouched skin between them so healing is fast. As the columns heal, new collagen forms and the surface is renewed.

It is the most powerful non-surgical treatment for wrinkles, sun damage and acne scars, and it comes with real downtime: about a week of raw, crusting skin.

What Fractional CO2 Laser involves

After strong numbing cream, sometimes with nerve blocks or sedation, the doctor passes the laser handpiece over the skin in a stamping pattern. Depth and density are adjusted to the problem: deeper for scars and lines around the mouth, lighter on the eyelids and neck. Antiviral tablets are started beforehand to prevent cold sores.

Who is a good candidate for Fractional CO2 Laser?

Skin type is the first thing the doctor assesses.

• Acne scars, particularly boxcar and rolling types
• Wrinkles around the mouth and eyes, and sun-damaged, leathery skin
• Surgical or traumatic scars
• Fair to light-olive skin that can stay out of the sun for weeks

It is usually not the right choice if:

• Darker skin, which carries a high risk of pigmentation; microneedling or RF microneedling is safer
• Isotretinoin in recent months, active acne or infection
• A tendency to keloids, or pregnancy
• Unable to take about a week away from work and public life

Treatment takes 30 to 60 minutes. It feels hot and prickly despite numbing. The skin is red, swollen and oozes clear fluid for the first day or two, and is kept covered with ointment.

• Darkening of the skin, the commonest complication, usually temporary; lightening is less common but can last
• Infection, including cold sore outbreaks, which can scar

• Scarring, mainly on the neck or when settings are too aggressive
