HIFU, high-intensity focused ultrasound, tightens the skin of the face and neck by delivering points of heat to the deep supporting layer, the same layer a surgeon tightens in a facelift, without breaking the surface.

Ultherapy is the best-studied device, with ultrasound imaging so the operator sees the layer being treated. Expect a mild, gradual lift. It delays surgery; it does not replace it.

What HIFU and Ultherapy involves

After cleansing, ultrasound gel is applied and the handpiece is moved across the brow, cheeks, jawline and neck. Transducers focus energy at depths of 1.5, 3 and 4.5 millimetres, creating tiny zones of heating that make the tissue contract and then lay down new collagen over the following months.

Who is a good candidate for HIFU and Ultherapy?

It helps most when laxity is mild.

• Mild to moderate laxity of the brow, lower face and neck
• Typically thirties to mid fifties
• Reasonable skin thickness and quality
• Wants a single treatment with little downtime

It is usually not the right choice if:

• Marked jowls or a loose neck, where the change will be too small to notice
• A very thin face, because deep heating can reduce facial fat

• Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers for a few days beforehand if your own doctor agrees, to reduce bruising
• Arrive without make-up on the treatment area and avoid sunbeds and strong sun for two weeks before

Mild redness, swelling or tenderness along the jaw for a few days, occasionally bruising or small raised lines that settle within a week. Tightening builds over two to three months and continues up to six.

• Temporary numbness or tingling

• Burns or lines on the skin if the handpiece is not held flat
• Unwanted fat loss in the cheeks
• No visible improvement
