Laser-assisted liposuction, known by brand names such as SmartLipo, uses a thin laser fibre passed under the skin to heat and liquefy fat before it is suctioned out. The heat also seals small blood vessels and warms the underside of the skin.
It is mainly used for small, stubborn areas such as the chin, arms, flanks and knees. Studies show fat removal comparable to standard liposuction, while the claimed extra skin tightening is modest and not consistently proven. It is not suited to large volumes and is not a treatment for obesity.
What Laser Liposuction (SmartLipo) involves
The areas are marked standing. Tumescent fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline is infiltrated through cuts of 2 to 3 millimetres. A laser fibre inside a 1 millimetre cannula is moved back and forth through the fat in a fan pattern; a red guide light shows its position through the skin, and skin temperature is monitored to stay below about 40 to 42 degrees Celsius. The liquefied fat is then removed with a fine suction cannula, since leaving it to be absorbed gives weaker results. A final superficial laser pass may be made to warm the dermis. The small cuts are left open or taped and a compression garment is fitted.
