Neck Lift

A neck lift tightens loose skin and the underlying platysma muscle, and removes or reshapes fat under the chin. It addresses a slack jawline, vertical neck bands and a so-called turkey neck.

It gives a sharper angle between chin and neck. It does not lift the cheeks or treat sun-damaged, crepey skin texture, and ageing continues afterwards. Jowls often need a facelift at the same time.

What Neck Lift involves

Incisions run around the earlobe and behind the ear into the hairline, with a short cut under the chin. Through the chin incision the surgeon removes or sculpts fat and stitches the separated edges of the platysma together in the midline, like lacing a corset. Through the ear incisions the muscle is pulled back and fixed to firm tissue behind the ear. The skin is then redraped without tension, the excess is trimmed, and fine stitches close the wounds. A small drain is often left overnight, and a supportive chin strap is fitted.

Who is a good candidate for Neck Lift?

It suits people whose main concern is below the jawline.

• You have loose neck skin or visible vertical bands at rest
• Fullness under the chin has not responded to weight control
• Your skin still has reasonable elasticity
• You are a non-smoker or can stop for several weeks

It is usually not the right choice if:

• Your main concern is sagging cheeks or deep folds beside the mouth
• You have uncontrolled blood pressure or take blood thinners that cannot be paused
• You are significantly overweight and planning to lose weight
• You have a very low hyoid bone or small chin, which limits the achievable angle unless also treated

Drains come out the next day and stitches at 5 to 8 days. Bruising can track down onto the chest and fades in 2 to 3 weeks. Sleep with your head raised and avoid turning the neck sharply for 2 weeks. Most people are presentable at 2 weeks and exercising at 4 to 6 weeks. Numbness and firmness under the chin take a few months to settle.

• Skin healing problems behind the ear, mainly in smokers
• Recurrent bands or laxity over time
