Nipple Aesthetics

Nipple aesthetics covers small operations on the nipple and areola: correcting inverted nipples, reducing long or large nipples, and reducing wide or puffy areolas.

These procedures change shape and projection. They do not lift the breast or change its size. Inverted nipple correction carries a real chance of recurrence and, in the more thorough techniques, of losing the ability to breastfeed.

What Nipple Aesthetics involves

For inversion, a tiny cut is made at the base of the nipple. The tight fibres and, in severe cases, the shortened milk ducts that tether it are released, and an internal purse-string stitch holds the nipple out. A small splint or stent protects it for 1 to 2 weeks. For nipple reduction, a collar or wedge of skin is removed from the nipple to shorten or narrow it. For areola reduction, a ring of pigmented skin is removed around the edge and the wound is closed with a permanent purse-string stitch to limit stretching.

Who is a good candidate for Nipple Aesthetics?

These are minor procedures for adults bothered by nipple shape.

• Your nipples have been inverted since puberty and do not stay out
• Long nipples show through clothing or rub
• Your areolas are wide or puffy in proportion to your breasts
• You are a man with prominent nipples after gynaecomastia treatment

It is usually not the right choice if:

• A nipple has newly turned inward; this needs breast assessment first, as it can signal disease
• You are pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed soon
• You have an active breast infection or nipple discharge that has not been investigated
• You want large changes to breast shape, which need a lift or reduction

• Duct-sparing inversion repair: For mild to moderate inversion. Better chance of breastfeeding, higher recurrence.
• Duct-dividing inversion repair: For severe, fixed inversion. More reliable, but breastfeeding is usually not possible afterwards.
• Nipple reduction: Shortens or narrows the nipple by removing skin.
• Areola reduction: A circular scar at the areola edge; often combined with a breast lift.

Each side takes 20 to 40 minutes under local anaesthetic, and you go home straight afterwards. You feel the injection sting and then pushing but no sharp pain. Dressings are small. After inversion repair you leave wearing a protective dome so that a bra does not press the nipple flat.

Soreness lasts a few days. You can work the next day if your job is not physical. Keep the area dry for 48 hours. Avoid tight bras and chest exercise for 2 to 3 weeks. Stitches dissolve or come out at 7 to 14 days. Swelling settles over 6 weeks, and scars on nipple skin usually become faint.
