Ocular Prosthetics (Artificial Eyes)

An ocular prosthesis, or artificial eye, is a custom-made acrylic shell that sits behind the eyelids over an orbital implant after an eye has been removed, or over a blind, shrunken eye as a scleral shell. An ocularist shapes it to your socket and hand-paints it to match your other eye.

A well-made prosthesis restores a natural appearance and supports the eyelids and socket. It does not see, and no current device restores sight this way. Movement is usually less than that of the other eye, especially on extreme gaze, and the pupil does not react to light.

What Ocular Prosthetics (Artificial Eyes) involves

Fitting begins once the socket has healed, usually 6 to 8 weeks after enucleation or evisceration, during which a clear conformer keeps the space open. The ocularist takes an impression of the socket with a soft alginate material, much like a dental mould, and makes a wax model that is tried in and adjusted until the lids sit level and open evenly. The iris is painted while you sit opposite, matching colour, limbal ring and pupil size in room light; fine red threads imitate blood vessels on the white. The shell is then cured in medical acrylic, polished to a high gloss, and tried again for comfort and movement. You are taught how to insert, remove and clean it.

If your socket has already healed, a custom prosthesis can be made in one stay of about 5 to 7 days with 2 to 4 fitting visits. Most people wear the prosthesis day and night and remove it for cleaning only every few weeks, or as advised. It should be professionally polished every 6 to 12 months and replaced about every 5 years in adults, and much more often in growing children. Wear protective glasses to safeguard your seeing eye.

• A poor colour or gaze match needing a remake
