Obstructive sleep apnoea is repeated collapse of the throat during sleep, causing pauses in breathing, drops in oxygen and broken sleep. Treatment keeps the airway open, most often with a CPAP machine that blows gentle air pressure through a mask.

Effective treatment stops snoring and pauses, restores daytime alertness and helps blood pressure. CPAP works only on the nights it is worn, and no option, including surgery, suits everyone, so the plan is built on a sleep study and an airway examination.

What Sleep Apnoea Treatment involves

Diagnosis comes first: an overnight sleep study, either full polysomnography in a sleep laboratory or a home test, counts breathing pauses per hour (the AHI). Mild is 5 to 15, moderate 15 to 30 and severe above 30. An ENT examination, sometimes with a sedated endoscopy, shows where the airway collapses. For moderate and severe apnoea a CPAP trial follows. A technician fits a nasal or face mask, an auto-adjusting machine finds the pressure you need over several nights, and the data are downloaded and reviewed. Alternatives are a custom dental splint that holds the lower jaw forward, weight loss treatment, positional devices and, for selected anatomy, surgery.

Who is a good candidate for Sleep Apnoea Treatment?

Anyone with confirmed sleep apnoea and symptoms, or with severe apnoea regardless of symptoms, should be offered treatment.

It is usually not the right choice if:

A laboratory sleep study means one night in a quiet room with sensors on the scalp, face, chest and finger. It is not painful, although sleep may be lighter than usual. Mask fitting and CPAP education take about an hour. A splint needs dental impressions or scans and a second fitting visit.

الإعداد لرحلتك

Assessment, a sleep study, ENT examination and CPAP set-up can be completed in 3 to 5 days. A dental splint needs about a week between impressions and fitting, or two short visits. Surgery needs 7 to 10 days. CPAP is a lifelong treatment, so before buying a machine abroad confirm that the model is serviced in your country and that a local clinic or remote monitoring can adjust it.

التعافي والنتائج

There is no recovery period with CPAP, but there is an adjustment period of 2 to 6 weeks. Dry mouth, mask leaks and nasal stuffiness are common early problems solved with humidification and a different mask. Many people feel more alert within the first week. Palate or tonsil surgery causes a very sore throat for 10 to 14 days.

سياسة السلامة والمخاطر والتنقيح

CPAP and splints are safe. The main risk is giving up on them. Surgery carries the usual operative risks.

الأسئلة المتكررة

Is surgery a cure so I can avoid CPAP?

Sometimes, in carefully selected anatomy such as very large tonsils. For most adults surgery reduces but does not abolish apnoea.

Can I use a home test instead of a lab study?

For a typical adult with a high likelihood of obstructive apnoea and no major heart or lung disease, a home test is acceptable.

Do I have to use CPAP every night?

Benefits depend on use. Aim for all night, every night. Taking it on trips is straightforward with modern travel machines.

Will losing weight cure it?

It can, particularly in mild to moderate apnoea. A repeat sleep study after weight loss tells whether CPAP is still needed.
