Veneers are thin shells, usually 0.3 to 0.7 mm of ceramic, bonded to the front surface of teeth to change their colour, shape, length or spacing. They are made from lithium disilicate or layered feldspathic porcelain in a laboratory, or sculpted directly in composite resin.
They can transform the visible front teeth while keeping most of the natural tooth, provided it is bonded to enamel. The limit is permanence: once enamel is trimmed the tooth will always need a covering, and ceramic veneers are replaced on average every 10 to 20 years.
What Teeth Veneers involves
After an examination, X-rays and photographs, a wax-up and mock-up show the intended result on your own teeth. At the preparation visit the teeth are numbed and a controlled layer of enamel is removed from the front and biting edge, guided by depth grooves cut through the mock-up so that no more is taken than needed. A scan or impression and shade photographs go to the ceramist, and temporary veneers are spot-bonded. About 5 to 7 days later the veneers are tried in with a water-based paste so you can check colour and shape. Each tooth is then isolated, etched and primed, the ceramic is treated with hydrofluoric acid and silane, and the veneer is bonded with light-cured resin cement. Excess is cleaned away and the bite polished.
Who is a good candidate for Teeth Veneers?
Best for adults with healthy, reasonably straight front teeth whose concerns are colour, shape or small gaps.
