Vaginal rejuvenation is a marketing term, not a medical diagnosis. On this page it means non-surgical, energy-based treatments: fractional CO2 or erbium laser and radiofrequency probes that heat the vaginal wall to stimulate collagen. They are promoted for dryness, laxity and mild urine leakage.
The evidence is limited. Small studies report short-term improvement in dryness and comfort, but well-designed trials comparing laser with sham treatment have mostly found little or no difference. Regulators including the US FDA have warned against unproven claims. Established treatments exist for every one of these symptoms and should be considered first.
What Vaginal Rejuvenation involves
After a gynaecological history and examination, including a check that cervical screening is up to date and that there is no infection or prolapse needing other care, a slim probe is inserted into the vagina. With laser, the probe delivers a pattern of microscopic energy spots as it is rotated and withdrawn step by step. With radiofrequency, the probe is moved slowly to warm the tissue to about 40 to 45 degrees for several minutes per zone. No cuts are made. A course is usually three sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart, with a maintenance session about once a year if you feel it helps.
Who is a good candidate for Vaginal Rejuvenation?
Think of it as an optional treatment with uncertain benefit, after standard care has been discussed.
- You have menopausal dryness or discomfort and cannot or prefer not to use vaginal oestrogen, for example after breast cancer, and your oncologist agrees
- You have mild laxity or mild stress incontinence and have already tried supervised pelvic floor training
- You understand that the benefit is unproven and may be temporary
It is usually not the right choice if:
- You are pregnant or within 3 months of childbirth
- You have an active vaginal or urinary infection, undiagnosed bleeding or an abnormal smear
- You have significant prolapse or moderate to severe incontinence, which need proven treatment
- You have pelvic mesh in place or previous pelvic radiotherapy, unless a specialist advises otherwise
- You expect a lasting tightening comparable to surgery
الخيارات التقنية
- Fractional CO2 laser: The most studied device; trial results against sham are disappointing.
- Erbium YAG laser: Non-ablative heating, promoted for mild stress incontinence; evidence is early.
- Radiofrequency: Gentle heating with no downtime; small studies only.
- Vaginal oestrogen and moisturisers: The established first-line treatment for menopausal dryness.
- Pelvic floor physiotherapy: First-line for mild leakage and laxity, with good evidence.
- Surgery: Vaginoplasty, prolapse repair or a continence procedure for structural problems.
ماذا يحدث خلال علاجك
Each session lasts 15 to 30 minutes in an outpatient room without anaesthetic, though numbing cream may be applied at the entrance. You feel warmth and vibration, and sometimes a stinging sensation near the opening. You can walk out and carry on with your day.
الإعداد لرحلتك
A course is three sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, which does not fit a single trip. One session alone is unlikely to be worthwhile. Unless you visit regularly or live nearby, it makes more sense to have this treatment at home, if at all, and to use a visit for a specialist gynaecology assessment of the underlying symptoms.
- Tell the doctor about medication, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any history of cold sores, keloid scars or autoimmune disease
- Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers for a few days beforehand if your own doctor agrees, to reduce bruising
- Arrive without make-up on the treatment area and avoid sunbeds and strong sun for two weeks before
التعافي والنتائج
Expect a watery or pinkish discharge and mild soreness for 2 to 3 days. Avoid sex, tampons, baths and swimming for 5 to 7 days. Any benefit tends to build over the course and is reviewed 1 to 3 months after the last session. Effects, where present, usually fade within about 12 months.
- Back to everyday activity: None; no sex for 5 to 7 days
- When results show: Gradually over 1 to 3 months, if at all
- How long they last: Up to about 12 months
سياسة السلامة والمخاطر والتنقيح
Side effects are usually minor, but burns and scarring have been reported, particularly with poor technique.
- Burning, discharge or spotting for a few days
- Vaginal or urinary infection
- Burns, scarring or narrowing of the vagina
- New or worse pain during sex
- No noticeable benefit, which is a realistic possibility
- Delay in getting effective treatment for prolapse or incontinence

الأسئلة المتكررة
Does it really work?
For some women symptoms improve, but the better trials have not shown a clear advantage over a sham procedure. Be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise.
What should I try first?
Vaginal moisturisers and low-dose vaginal oestrogen for dryness; supervised pelvic floor exercises for leakage and laxity.
Is it safe after breast cancer?
It avoids hormones, which is the attraction, but safety and benefit data are limited. Discuss it with your oncology team.
What should I ask a provider?
Which device, what published evidence supports it for your symptom, who performs it, and what happens if there is a complication.
